Professor Ernesto Zedillo, President of Mexico from 1994 to 2000 gave a passionate speech criticising recent proposed government reforms of the judiciary as an attack on judicial independence at the opening ceremony of the IBA Conference in Mexico City.
He stated that the movement to elect judges will politicise the judiciary and open the door to tyranny. This is the view shared by the legal profession in Mexico and beyond. The IBA conference was picketed by striking judges and lawyers outraged by the proposed reforms.
Professor Zedillo is a member of The Elders, an independent group of global leaders using their collective experience and influence for peace, justice and human rights worldwide.
