Overview

Whether before the UK or EU Courts or UN Sanctions Committee 9BR Chambers successfully challenge sanctions and have had them quashed, channelling extensive experience not least through our Head of Chambers sitting on the London Sanctions Advisors Association Board.

9BR Chambers expertise and experience in challenging sanctions is led by Steven Kay KC, our Head of Chambers, who sits on the Board of Directors of the London Sanctions Advisors Association which is at the helm of the UK’s new sanctions order.

Our counsel brought the first challenges to sanctions regimes under the Sanctions and Anti-Money Laundering Act 2018 (SAMLA) and have successfully quashed sanctions before the General Court of the European Union and the European Court of Justice. Our team deals with sanction compliance and regulation, breaches, international trade and export control. We are instructed to make licence applications to the UK’s Office of Financial Sanctions Implementation (OFSI), to challenge asset freeze and trust services measures.

9BR Chambers has extensive experience before the UN Sanctions Committee and other UN bodies. We advise individuals and entities in relation to delisting requests before the UN Sanctions Committee as well as applications for the lifting of UN arms embargo restrictions. Further, 9BR counsel have secured humanitarian exemptions for individual clients before the UN Sanctions Committee and have made submissions before the UN Special Rapporteur on Unilateral Coercive Measures.
