Before starting pupillage, Matthew spent over three years working in the field of international criminal law.
After completing his LLM in Public International Law at Leiden University, he worked as a legal assistant assigned to the defence of Jovica Stanišić in the trial and appeal proceedings before the UN International Residual Mechanism for Criminal Tribunals. Following this, Matthew worked as a legal advisor for Global Rights Compliance, where he contributed to a range of legal and advisory projects geared towards pursuing accountability for human rights violations and atrocity crimes.
Most recently, Matthew worked in Ukraine on a capacity building project where he trained and advised Ukrainian prosecutors on the investigation and prosecution of conflict-related crimes. He delivered training to Ukrainian criminal justice actors on international criminal and humanitarian law, and advised on live war crimes cases.
During the Bar Course, Matthew volunteered for the Prisoner’s Advice Service, where he responded to letters from prisoners with legal advice and information.
