Prior to undertaking pupillage at 9BR Chambers, Niamh worked on complex and high profile cases at leading human rights firms across a wide range of practice areas.
Niamh spent five years assisting leading solicitor, Gareth Peirce, in defending Julian Assange’s extradition to the United States of America throughout the first instance proceedings and subsequent appeals since his arrest in 2019, up until his release in 2024.
Whilst working in the criminal defence department at Birnberg Peirce, she also assisted in number of appeals against deprivation of citizenship for British women detained in Syria, including the substantive SIAC appeal of Shamima Begum in 2022, and advised clients subject to financial sanctions, Temporary Exclusion Orders and anti-social behaviour injunctions.
Before being called to the Bar, Niamh worked as a paralegal in the human rights department at Leigh Day for three years, assisting a busy specialist judicial review team in a wide range of claims relating to victims of trafficking, welfare benefits, hospital closures, and the environment.
During her MSc in Criminology and Criminal Justice at the University of Oxford, Niamh developed a particular interest in sentencing principles, youth justice, and the intersection of immigration and the criminal law.
In 2018, Niamh was awarded a fellowship from the Bonavero Institute of Human Rights to complete a traineeship with the international crime team at the European Center of Constitutional Rights in Berlin.
