Jane Bickerstaff’s client was acquitted of both rape and attempted rape after waiting since December 2018. The inordinate delay was due to police inefficiency in investigation and the effects of the pandemic. Her client has now had a fair trial before HHJ Nott and was fortunate to secure an open minded jury, who were prepared to think about the real issues, rather being seduced by the superficially attractive prosecution case of a voluntarily intoxicated complainant who claimed to have no autonomy or memory. This job has become relentlessly pressurised, but days like yesterday make it still worthwhile.
Jane appears alone, instructed by Rishi Verma from ABV solicitors.
